(Long discussion post warning)
*This is just my personal opinion, if you don't share it, that's alright :3 no need for any conflict*
Well, we all got something to say about Mewtwo's new form. Some of us like it, others hate it... some of us were hoping it was a new pokemon altogether, others were more for the "different forme" side. And now that this last doubt has been put to rest... is it really the *worst thing* for mewtwo? Does it really disrespect the formerly "Most powerful creature in the world"?
Well for starters, Mewtwo's backstory is the more adult of the franchise and pretty much the only "heavy" storyline of generation 1. Being a genetic experiment, the appearance of a new forme is easily backed up with backstory as long as it's not "Because of the power of love"! (which would be a lame explanation for the forme shift)
What is he in the game? Formerly the single most powerful and unstoppable pokemon of all, later rivalled by Ho-Oh, Lugia, Rayquaza, the "god trio", and the Tao couple for stat supremacy, and then left behind (though not too much) by Arceus and the B/W Kyurems. But really how strong is he?
Mewtwo is an Uber, mostly used as a Special Sweeper; focused in hitting hard and fast with his gargantuan Special Attack and very respectable speed. So how can Newtwo actually improve upon this?
*The following take into account some subjective elements such as Newtwo's "delicate" design and such.*
1.- More Focused Stat Distribution-
Though Mewtwo has an awesome Sp Atk, third best in the pokemon game, it is just barely above the mainstream ubers... and anyone who wishes to bring out his full potential knows that his physical Atk is to be mostly disregarded... but that is one bulky 110 base physical attack to disregard!
As a Special Sweeper, Mewtwo doesn't need his physical atk, and yet has an above average one... meaning that a sixth of his stats go to waste, and thus why Attack Deoxys can give it a wallop despite being 80 stat total points below. **So seeing as pokemon Formes don't raise or lower a pokemon stats, but rather re-distribute them, "Newtwo" could, in fact, redistribute Mewtwo stats to become the super-focused special sweeper it was born to be. Seeing the rather scrawny new form, it isn't difficult to imagine it sacrificing the unneeded Atk stat to bulk up Sp Atk into godhood, or even raise speed, or both!
2.- Deadlier abilities-
Being honest, Mewtwo's abilities are not too impressive, Unnerve blocks berries, and pressure doubles PP loss. The latter is useful, true, but what would happen if Newtwo brought with it a better ability? Or even an exclusive ability like Terabolt or Turboblaze? It could indeed make it very interesting for set-making and repurposing of the pokemon's insane stats.
3.- Modernization of movesets-
Mewtwo has had some attacks added to his arsenal to have him keep on track with the newer legends, such as Psystrike and Aurasphere. But nowaddays species-exclusive moves for legendaries are all the rage! Imagine a Mewtwo with his own version of V-Create, Judgement, or the like? A Move to compliment on his power and importance in the pokemon lore! Newtwo does indeed grant that possibility, seeing as nintendo is trying its damnest to make it "hip" with the new pokemon generation.
4.- Bringing the Veteran back into action-
I'm sure we all felt it, a very difficult to describe joy when we saw that movie trailer with Mewtwo being his usual badass self, stopping a Genesect's technoblast like it was nothing. But having legends return in movies has rarely meant much other than maybe some mystery gift or gamestop event to get the legend when the movie comes out and the like. However, with all this fuss made about a new forme, the theme of DNA being the main theory as to the direction the new gen's storyline will go for... Newtwo could in fact be the doorway to getting our beloved Chuck Norris of the pokemon world right in the thick of things. Mewtwo could really "Strike Back" and not just for a straight-to-DVD movie for him to angst and fight team rocket in... I do mean playing an important role in the new generation storyline! And seeing as each new gen brings more complex and engaging storylines, things could really turn out to be EPIC.
BONUS.- There's a new Super Smash Bros. coming... any of you already connect the dots why I'm saying that here?
And that's it, sorry about the enormous rant/presentation, whatever you guys wanna call it.
Have a nice day!
